Being Mary Bennet // JC Peterson

There are many underrated characters in Jane Austen's canon, and Mary Bennet is one of them. She's a toughie, too, because she's not what you'd consider a likable character. Straight-laced, good, inflexible might be some adjectives to describe her. But JC Peterson takes this side character and turns her into the leading lady, through her protagonist Marnie Barnes.

This was a soft book, for us quiet girls. It has a meandering plot, mimicking the style of Pride and Prejudice, but is a thoroughly modern twist on the classic. The Barnes family is quirksome and irksome, Marnie's roommate Adhira is absolutely heroic, and I fell in love with Whit (whose full name reminds me of some characters from an old radio show I used to love...wondering if the mashup is intentional...?) as slow and syruply sweetly as Marnie did.

Looking forward to reading more by Peterson in the future!
